Vote THURSDAY!!

On September 28, 2009, the Shelby County Commission unanimously appointed Regina Morrison Newman as County Trustee, to fill the vacancy created by the untimely passing of Trustee Paul Mattila.

Regina brought with her sixteen-plus years of experience in public service, followed by fifteen years as an attorney in private practice in Shelby County. Beginning before her graduation from Rhodes College in 1979, Regina served the City of Memphis for a total of nine years, including several years as an internal consultant on budget and staffing issues. During her final three years with City government, she served as Assistant City Treasurer, at a time when the Treasurer’s office collected all property taxes and fees in-house, and when the percentage of property taxes collected reached its highest points ever up to that time.

In 1987, she left Memphis government when she was appointed by then-Governor Ned McWherter to the Tennessee Department of Revenue as Assistant to the Commissioner of Revenue in Nashville. When, in 1989, the State of Tennessee formed a new department of 1,200 employees called Youth Development, Regina was asked to serve as personnel director for the department.

In 1994, after graduating from law school and passing the bar while working full-time, Regina returned to Memphis and began her private law practice concentrating in the area of civil trial law. While serving individual clients, as well as large and small businesses for the last fifteen years, she has remained involved in civic, political and community endeavors throughout Memphis and Shelby County, as she has for the last 30 years, including:

  • Diversity Memphis
  • Memphis Area Women’s Foundation
  • Sponsor, Public Issues Forum
  • League of Women Voters
  • Member, Women of Achievement
  • University of Memphis, Center for Research on Women
  • Worker’s Interfaith Network
  • Vice-President, Idlewild Neighborhood Association
  • Former Board Member, Big Brothers/Big Sisters
  • Tennessee Bar Association
  • TN Lawyers Association for Women

Regina was born in Kentucky and came to Shelby County in 1975 to go to Southwestern at Memphis – now Rhodes College.  While in Memphis, she met and married Robert A. Newman, a financial advisor, and they reside in Midtown.

Regina believes in treating all persons fairly and with respect, and emphasizes that government is about serving the citizens.  She works for you and she has shown that she knows how to do the job right!
